Reflection on reading habits

Tis entry will explore the different questions which arose from the activity related with reading habits and the teaching a foreign language practice.

1. What kind of books or texts are the people reading? Did they chose the books themselves or did someone else choose for them?

It seems to be a huge variety of texts and books on the different pictures given. In the library, tons of people are reading the book, as far as I can imagine, they have chosen, as well as the person reading in the e-book, with the possibility of selecting whatever they want in the catalogue. On the other hand, I can tell in picture in black and white, the one of pupils and the other of a chinese men reading the paper, they all couldn't choose the reading they want. In the old picture they are reading an encyclopedic book in a time when books aren't affordable for everyone, so there is the limit of money. In the school, children are reading what the teacher gave to them. And in the last picture, a men is reading the newspaper in a country with very limited freedom of information, so I can imagine he is reading what the politicians let him to get.

2. Describe how they might be feeling at the moment and give reasons.

As I described the different willings of each picture, I can tell the different emotions related. In the library, I imagine they are all relaxed, reading what the want or looking for information, in a beautiful space created to be focus on the task of reading. In the b/w picture, I think they could be struggling with the lacks of their realitites but in the same time they are discovering the world. In the school, pupils are reading because they are told to do so, thus, each one is feeling different emotions from the rest: somebody is bored and sure there is others amused. The person reading the e_book, as it is a tool for spare time, she might be relaxed, enjoying the reading. And the person with the newspaper in that society full of lacks, sure he is worried and looking for useful information about the world sorrounding.

3. Focus on one or two of the photos and say how they relate to your own experience as a reader in L1 (Spanish) and L2 (English or another foreign language). Think about the following things:

- What texts do you enjoy reading in each language that you speak?

- Do you choose the same kind of texts or do you read very different things depending on the language? What factors determine your choice?

- In what format do you read (paper, e-reader, online etc.)?

- When do you read?

Well, I am going to focus on the picture of the woman reading her e-book, just because it is the main format I use in my daily life to read when I do it for joy. I have to say that the most of the time I read about topics or documents I am obliged by my work. So, about the first question, I could do a chart about the kind of texts I like reading in both languages, English and Spanish. In the first position there are those thrilling stories, novels with some mystery and very intriguing. But in second position I enjoy reading about history or even education, always from an expert perspective, which gives me a knowledge about some subject. In relation to the second question, I have already said the factors I take into account when I choose a text just for having an amusing time. Stories about sports, music, cinema, paintings, culture overall is the perfect background to recreate a story with ingredients such as mistery and action. As I said, the format chosen the most of the time is my e-book, but I tend to get informed in different topics by using my computer, as well. In a lesser extent, I am used to buy and read comics and magazines. About the reading time, in my case I use to read before going to bed, when I am relaxed or even in my bed.
